Mnemoancy, the domain of memory magic

Hello, Wizboy here, your local Winnipeg digital journalist, providing you with the latest news in the city of Winnipeg and beyond.

I got a report on some magicians in the Occult Underground.

However, I've found additional information about them that this report doesn't include.

First off, this branch of sorcery is connected to the sorcery of Dream-mancy.

Mnemonancy was created by a certain intersection of psychologists and mystics.

The practitioners are often derogatorily called mind-rapists or mind-violators.

The practice of this black magic is secret and relatively unknown. I am happy to report on this branch of sorcery and let it be known to the broader world.

Also, this is a magic of the mind and when you open your mind and enter into the minds of others, what do you let in? Is what I have heard from a mnemomancer.

MNEMOMANCERS (aka mnemosynists, memo-mages, mindbenders, amnesiacs)

*The word mne⬝mo⬝mancy is derived from the Greek goddess of Memory, Mnemosyne

Domain of Magic: Memory, experiences, history, mental impressions, nostalgia, identity.

Medium: Any device that can capture a moment (cameras, cassette tapes, recorders… etc.), eye-contact, hypnosis, mind-altering substances, mementos…

Paradox: One would think that mnemomancers must naturally have perfect recall, but this is not the case. As they deal with the memories of others, they risk losing their own identities, this phenomenon is called “memory bleeding”.It's not that they are incapable of recalling memories; rather, they tend to recall the wrong ones most of the time. They can never be certain if a certain memory belongs to them, or someone else. This phenomenon also explains why some folks in the occult underground came up with the derogatory nickname, "amnesiacs”.

Factions: Allegedly, there are two predominant groups within the mnemomancers, the Bibliotheca Memoria and the Cult of Enigmata, both equally shrouded in myths.

The Bibliotheca Memoria seeks to scour the world for unique experiences and preserve them, contributing to humanity's vast library of collective memory. They believe that while all things may perish, memories offer a means of eternal existence. While their goal may seem noble, there's a distinction between preserving a memory and preserving the person experiencing it. Members of the Library can sometimes become detached, merely observing moments in time without intervention. To a Librarian, the tragic death of an individual holds as much significance as their birth and must be recorded impartially.

On the flip side, the Cult of Enigmata dedicates itself to fabricating, obfuscating, destroying, and erasing the history of the universe. These guys are the real menace. They dismantle records, concoct myths and rumors, introduce conflicting narratives... all in an effort to sow doubt and disrupt the certainty of knowledge. Their end goal is to ultimately foster curiosity and spirit of inquiry. The Cult’s mere existence shakes the very foundation of truth and identity. Few schools of magic can instill such pervasive paranoia simply by existing.
